Jock Campbell leaves the Reds for Japan's Shizuoka Blue Revs
Jock Campbell is heading to Japan. The Shizuoka Blue Revs announced on 1 November that the Queensland Reds fullback has signed a player contract for the 2026-27 season.
Campbell is 31 and has six Wallaby caps. He came back into the national team this year after four years out of it. His 2026 Super Rugby season earned him the fullback spot in the competition's best XV and the Reds' most valuable player award. He also ran for 1,025 carry metres, the most of any player in the competition, according to the club.
He joins Hunter Paisami, who is also a current Wallaby, at Shizuoka. The League One season opens on 12 December. Campbell made his Super Rugby debut for the Reds in 2019.
The club's release gives no contract terms. His salary is not public, and nothing reported so far says what currency he is paid in.
What it means for the move
Nobody outside the contract knows the money details, so this is general. For any Australian player weighing a deal in Japan, the first 90 days are where the gaps show up.
Work out the pay currency before you sign, and when the first pay lands compared with when rent, a deposit and a flight home for family are due. Ask the club what it arranges on banking and housing and what is left to the player. Ask what the club handles on visas for a partner or children, and put the answers in writing. Tax is a separate question for a qualified adviser in both countries.
If part of the deal is paid in a foreign currency while the mortgage and family costs stay in Australian dollars, that gap is worth planning early. SportsFX, the currency partner behind The Overseas Athlete, helps with that side.
